Do I need a permit to put up a shed? Yes. A shed is considered an additional structure, therefore, even a prefabricated shed requires an
approved permit before it can be erected.
What regulations do I need to follow when installing a fence? West Goshen Township does not have an ordinance regulating installation,
type, or height of fence permitted. However, if you plan to erect a fence on a corner property, we request that you contact the West Goshen Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit at
610-696-7400.
The purpose of your call would be to set up an appointment with an officer from the Traffic Unit to meet you at your property, at which time you would show the officer where you plan to erect the fence. The officer would then advise you if the site where you wish to erect the fence would create a sight problem for drivers exiting the intersection, as well as the required distance from the corner if there is a problem. You could then erect the fence without a permit or inspection by the Township.
On a lot other than a corner lot, a fence may be erected along the rear or side yard.
If the fence is erected in the front yard, it may not extend beyond the road right-of-way. You would need to check with the Township Zoning Officer of Township Building Official for the right-of-way line on your property. If the right-of-way of your street is 50 feet, you would measure 25 feet from the center of the road onto your property. The fence should be erected in back of the right-of-way line on your property.
In order to maintain both sides of the fence without going onto your neighbor's property, we suggest that you place the fence three to five feet from your property line.
Does the Township have any ordinances regarding barking dogs? The Township does not have a barking dog ordinance. However, in
the Township Code, under Disturbing the Peace, the Township would be permitted to fine the owner of a dog whose barking is disturbing the peace and quiet of your neighborhood; provided sufficient
evidence were collected to substantiate the claim.
