West Goshen Township Parks and Recreation Board Meeting June 19, 2002 Meeting Notes

Meeting called to Order: 7:04 PM by Vice-Chairman Jerry Napiecek
Jerry Napiecek began the June 19th meeting by leading the members of the Park and Recreation Board in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the American flag.
After a review of the minutes submitted for the May 15, 2002 meeting, Ken Lehr informed that approval of the minutes would have to be deferred until the July Park and Recreation Board meeting since the
minimum number of members (quorum) required for approval were not present at the June meeting.
The Financial Report dated May 31, 2002 was reviewed. There were no questions or comments pertaining to the Financial Report.
Parks:
Kent Wise reported that the crews are busy cutting grass and working on the ball fields at the various Township Parks. At the Township Building, the crews are in the process of trimming and removing the dead trees. At the Community Park, the crews are edging and mulching the various flower and shrub beds located throughout the park. Kent Wise informed that the crews are spending 1 day a week clearing the wooded lot directly behind the recycle center on Turner Lane. Kent Wise stated that the plan is to convert this area into a yard that will have bins for storing playground and landscape mulch. Additionally, the Township will utilize the new yard to temporarily store debris from jobs the Park crew and/or Road crew are working on. Kent Wise reported that the Township had purchased 100 yards of playground mulch that will be utilized at the various Township parks and informed that the work to spread the playground mulch at the Community Park has already been completed. Kent Wise informed the 2 Summer Helpers (Tom Ralph and Scott Laudenslager) that started on Monday, July 14th are
working out very well. Finally, Kent Wise reported that he, along with Sharon Lynn, Ray Halvorsen and Ken Lehr are planning a trip to Cheltenham Township on June 25th to take a look at an existing Skate Park located within the township.
Recreation: Al Roth reported that the 8-week Summer Camp program started on Monday, June 17th.
Al Roth informed that the first trip (roller skating) for the 2002 session was a success and stated that the counselors are doing OK. Al Roth indicated that the attendance for the 2002 Summer Camp program (morning sessions and clinics) is the best the Township has ever experienced. Al Roth distributed a copy of the proposed 2002 Summer Camp trip schedule to the members of the Park and Recreation Board for review. The 8-week 2002 Summer Camp program will through Friday August 9th.
Friends of the Park: Pat Kelly reporting for the Friends stated that she would like to review the proposed schedule for the July 4th Decorated Bike parade with Ken Lehr. Pat Kelly stated that the Friends would like to line-up Officer Friendly for this year's event. Ken Lehr reported that the Tall
Cedar Clowns would provide the entertainment for this year's event. Pat Kelly informed that the Friends would need 2 tables and several chairs to support processing the patrons that have pre-registered as well as those who want to register for the Decorated Bike parade. Pat Kelly also indicated that the Friends would need a microphone and amplifier for this year's event. Ken Lehr stated that the Township's portable unit should be sufficient. Ken Lehr reported that the Township would present "participation"
medals to the children that take part in the parade.
Pat Kelly asked who would be responsible for getting the numbers and pins for the participants in this year's event informing that the Township needed about 150 numbers last year. Ken Lehr informed that Peggy Neimeyer had requested a list of volunteers that would be available to support this year's event. The Decorated Bike parade is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 4th.
All volunteers are asked to arrive at the Community Park by 9:30 AM.
Old Business: Ken Lehr reporting on upcoming bus trips informed that the June 29th trip Baltimore to see the Phillies play the Orioles has been sold out.
Ken Lehr informed that the Township would also offer a trip to Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees play the Texas Rangers on Saturday, August 24th. The cost of the bus trip is $49.00 per
person. Ken Lehr indicated that Township had reserved 1 bus for this trip.
The bus will depart from the Township Building at noon; and arrive at Yankee Stadium at 3:00 PM. The bus will return immediately after the completion of the 4:05 PM Yankees-Rangers game. Ken Lehr reported that at this time, the Township has sold 16 out of the 47 tickets available for the game.
Ken Lehr reporting on the Summer Concert Series informed that 250 to 275 people attended the June 16th "Children's Night Out Concert" featuring Two of a Kind. The next event for the Summer Concert Series is "Mummers" night on June 30th featuring the Uptown String Band. Ken Lehr informed that the West Chester East High School Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble performed at a "sneak preview"
for the Summer Concert Series on June 2nd. Ken Lehr indicated that 200 to 220 people attended this event and stated that everything went very well.
Jerry Napiecek asked if the Township has been able to determine why John Leary did not have the Concession Stand available for the June 16th Summer Concert Series performance. Information on the Summer Concert Series is listed below:
