West Goshen Township Parks and Recreation Board Meeting June 15 2005 Minutes
Attending: Les Bair, Bob Cifone, Jerry Napiecek, Michael Pillagalli and Ed Smith
Township Representatives: Sharon Lynn, Pat McIlvaine, and Kent Wise
Friends of the Park: Peggy Niemeyer and Megan Zug
Public Representatives: Harry Helms from the American Legion Post #134
Meeting called to Order: 7:00 PM by Chairman Michael Pillagalli
Michael Pillagalli began the June 15th meeting by leading the members of the Park and Recreation Board in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the American flag.
After a review of the minutes submitted for the May 18, 2005 meeting, a motion was made by Jerry Napiecek to accept the minutes as submitted. The motion was seconded by Bob Cifone and
passed.
The Financial Report dated May 31, 2005 was reviewed. There were no questions or comments pertaining to the Financial Report.
Sharon Lynn informed that Ken Lehr had a family emergency that would prevent him from attending the June 15th Park and Recreation Board meeting.
Parks: Kent Wise reported that the crews are busy cutting grass, edging and mulching at the various Township Parks. Kent Wise informed that the crews are currently cutting
back the wood line at Coopersmith Park and the Community Park. Kent Wise reported that the first of four fertilizer treatments have been applied at the Community Park, Hallowell Field and
the Richard C. Cloud Park.
Kent Wise indicated that a new roof has been installed on the pavilion at Barker Park at a cost of $3,160. Finally, Kent Wise reported that the pavilion at Coopersmith Park was the target of vandalism last Wednesday (June 9th)
informing that a door and one side of the building were damaged by spray paint.
Recreation: Sharon Lynn reporting on the Summer Recreation Program informed that after the 2nd day of registration, Barker Park is at full capacity, the Community Park has 120 campers registered (down from last year) and Coopersmith Park has 80+ registered (about the same as last year). Sharon Lynn reported that Ken Lehr and Al Roth led the June 4th Summer Recreation staff orientation session indicating the orientation session went well. The 2005 Summer Recreation Program is scheduled to begin on June 20th and run through August 12th.
Sharon Lynn reporting on the new Teen Summer Recreation program informed that 30 teens registered for the new program.
Sharon Lynn stated the Township is pleased with head counselor Steve Nichols indicating he will do well for the new program.
Friends of the Park: Megan Zug reporting for the Friends of West Goshen Parks informed the organization is actively looking for ways to attract new members with the required level
of commitment.
Megan Zug indicated the members of the Friends of West Goshen Parks are making personal calls to solicit new membership. Megan Zug reported that at this time, around $6,000 in sponsorship has been secured for the Summer Concert Series. She said that in January the Friends of West Goshen Parks committed to raising $7,500 for the 2005 program. Sharon Lynn provided an update on sponsors informing that there are currently around $7,000 in sponsorships that include donations from Faulkner Pontiac, QVC and the Commerce Bank. Sharon Lynn informed that the next quarterly board meeting for the Friends is scheduled for the 1st Thursday in July stating new officers would be elected at that time. Sharon Lynn reported that Megan Zug has requested to be considered for the vacant position on the Park and Recreation Board. Sharon Lynn stated that appointing Megan Zug to the Park and Recreation Board would also fill a requirement of having a member from the Park and Recreation Board serve on the Friends of West Goshen Parks Board of Directors.
Old Business: Sharon Lynn reporting on the June 11th tour of the Township's parks informed that 8 people registered but only 3 people actually showed up for the tour. The tour initiated at the Community Park and concluded at the West Goshen Township Building with lunch along the way at Barker Park. Finally, Sharon Lynn indicated that Friends of West Goshen Parks are trying to recruit everyone that attended the tour.
Sharon Lynn reporting on upcoming bus trips informed that the June 18th open bus trip (drop-off and pick-up) to New York City has sold out. Sharon Lynn indicated that there are still twenty openings for the July 16th open bus trip (drop-off and pick-up) to Washington, DC and informed the July 31st trip to Yankee Stadium has also sold out.
Sharon Lynn reporting on the Summer Concert Series informed that the first concert of the 2005 program (Children's Concert) went off as scheduled on June 12th. Information on
