West Goshen Township Park and Recreation Board Meeting April 21, 2010

Township Representatives: Kent Wise, Ken Lehr, and Tom Steines
The meeting was called to order by Chair Nancy Pine at 7:00 p.m.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes from the March 17, 2010 meeting were reviewed and a motion was made to approve as written by
Jerry Napiecek and seconded by Bob Cifone. Motion was passed.
Treasury statement was reviewed and no questions were generated.
Parks Department: Kent Wise said that spring clean up is finished except for in Barker
Park which is wet from rains. The parks crew started cutting grass three weeks ago at all locations. 21 tons of sand were received and are being spread in sand boxes and on volleyball
courts. The basketball courts were resurfaced after thirteen years of usage. Cost was @$10,000. Tennis court resurfacing needs to be budgeted for next year. Some fencing is being
replaced on softball and Little League fields. Parks crew members reported dog waste left at the dogpark while mowing. Users cleaned up reported areas by the second mowing. Kent Wise had
no reports of any vandalism.
Summer Recreation Program and Summer Teen Program: Tom Steins indicated that the programs
will be at same three parks and run from June 21st until August 13th. Tom Steines and Ken Lehr have finished interviewing candidates for the counselor positions, and were
working on interviewing over 35 applicants for the 14 junior counselor positions. April 29th is the deadline for junior counselor applications. Parents can register their children for the Summer Recreation Program and Summer Teen Program at the West Goshen Township Building on May 8th between 8 AM and 11 AM, and May 15th between 9 AM and 11 AM. Tom Steines indicated that he is busy lining up field trips, ordering sports equipment, organizing counselor orientation, running counselor security checks, etc.
Friends of West Goshen Parks: Ken Lehr reported that the Annual Membership Meeting of The
Friends of West Goshen Parks would be held on May 6th. Jerry Napiecek volunteered to be the Park and Recreation Board representative on The Friends of West Goshen Parks Board of
Directors. The Friends of West Goshen Parks are seeking submissions for Board of Directors candidates by May 6th. Finally, Ken Lehr indicated that full restitution of the missing
monies has been restored to the treasury of the Friends of West Goshen Parks.
Old Business
Bus Trips: Ken Lehr indicated that the Washington
D.C. Cherry Blossom Trip was a success even with a four hour return bus ride. Planning is underway for a July 10th Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island trip, a July 20th to Yankee Stadium, an August 1st trip to D.C. for the Phillies vs. the Nationals, and a September 11th trip to Citi Field for the Phillies vs. the Mets. Ken Lehr said that another bus has been added for the June 19th New York City on Your Own trip. The May 20th-24th Cape Cod trip is filled.
Fitness Programs: Ken Lehr said that there were no registrations for April water
walking. The spring Adventure Camp for Women session ends the week of May 21st.
Summer Concerts: Ken Lehr had nothing to report on at this time except funding is
expected to start coming in from local businesses.
Egg Hunt / Decorated Hat Parade: Ken Lehr estimated attendance at this year's event at
500 to 600. Some discussion was held about the timing of age brackets for egg hunting for 2011.
New Business: Ken Lehr reminded members of the projected walk at Jerrichian Property on May 15 for the Planning Commission and Park and Recreation Board. Lunch will be served to board members only. Ken Lehr indicated the Township Manager's office would have more details to follow.
The Park and Recreation Office has begun accepting registrations for summer skateboarding camps.
Tom Steines has been selected by the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society to participate in the
state LEAD Program on May 3 and 4, 2010 in State College, PA.
Harvest Festival will be held on October 24, 2010.
