West Goshen Township Parks and Recreation Board Meeting February 17, 2010
Minutes
Attending: Jennifer Dobbins, Nancy Pine, and Ed Smith
Township Representatives: Ken Lehr, Tom Steines, and Kent Wise
Meeting called to Order: 7:05 PM by Chair Nancy Pine
After a review of the minutes submitted for the January 20, 2010 meeting, a motion was made by Jennifer Dobbins to accept the minutes as
submitted. The motion was seconded by Kent Wise and passed.
The Financial Report dated January 31, 2010 was reviewed. Jennifer Dobbins asked for an explanation of the Park and Recreation Board Special
Funds Account. Ken Lehr informed that the account contains the proceeds from the sale of the weeping beach prints. There were no additional questions or comments pertaining to the Financial Report.
Parks: Kent Wise reported that the crew is providing support for the Township's snow
removal efforts, including maintenance work on the trucks and plows. Additionally, the crew continued efforts reconditioning the picnic tables at the various Township parks. Nancy Pine stated that
the Township has done a great job with snow removal efforts during this record setting winter. Kent Wise informed that salt and other snow removal supplies are holding up at this time. Kent
Wise indicated the order placed two weeks ago to replenish the road salt inventory may not come in until April.
Recreation: Tom Steines, reporting on the Summer Recreation Program, informed that the
Township is focusing on lining up counselors at this time. Tom Steines indicated that the Township would accept applications for counselor positions through April 1st. Applicants for the counselor
positions must be 18 year old by June 21st. Additionally, the Township is accepting applications for junior counselor positions through April 29th. Applicants for the junior counselor
positions must be 16 years old by June 21st. Tom Steines indicated that the Township interviewed over 100 applicants to fill the open positions for last year's program. Registration for the 2010
Summer Programs is scheduled for Saturday, May 8th (8:00 am-11:00 am) and Saturday, May 15th (9:00 am-11:00 am). The 2010 Summer Recreation Program is scheduled to begin on June 21st and run through
August 13th.
Tom Steines, reporting on the Summer Teen Program, informed that he is currently researching opportunities for field trips and community service
projects for the 2010 program. Jennifer Dobbins asked if they had contacted anyone from the Salvation Army to see if they could utilize help from the Teen Summer Program participants for their food
distribution activities. Tom Steines indicated that he would make contact with the Salvation Army to see if there is an opportunity there for a community service project. Tom Steines reported
that he contacted representatives from Safe Harbor to see if they could utilize the Summer Teen Program participants for a community service project. Tom Steines said Safe Harbor would not be an
option for a community service project due to scheduling complications. The 2010 Summer Teen Program is scheduled to begin on June 21st and run through August 13th.
Friends of the Park: Jennifer Dobbins, reporting for the Friends of West Goshen Parks, said
there is not much to report at this time. Jennifer Dobbins indicated that the position of Secretary still remains open. An article for officer positions appeared in the latest Township
Newsletter. Ken Lehr informed that the next Board of Directors meeting for the Friends of West Goshen Parks is scheduled for the first Thursday in March (March 4th) at 7:00 PM.
Old Business: Ken Lehr, reporting on Township bus trips, informed that the Township has three bus
trips planned for early spring. Ken Lehr indicated that at this time 22 people have signed up for the March 4th trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show. The cost of this trip is $49 per person, and includes
round trip bus transportation and one ticket to the show. Ken Lehr reported that the Township has lined up three buses (162 seat capacity) for the April 11th trip to Washington D.C. for the Cherry
Blossom Festival. At this time, 94 of the 162 available seats have been filled. The cost of the Washington D.C. trip is $35 per person. Finally, Ken Lehr informed that the Township is planning
a trip to Cape Cod from May 20th to May 24th. The trip is a joint venture with East Goshen Township and the Borough of West Chester. At this time 35 of the 54 available seats have been
filled. Ken Lehr indicated that he expects the remaining tickets to sell within the next three to four weeks. The cost of the trip is $769 for single occupancy room, $619/person for double
occupancy room, $599/person for a triple occupancy room and $579/person for a quad occupancy room.
Ken Lehr reporting on Senior Water Walking at ACAC informed that no Township residents registered for the February session. Ken Lehr indicated
that these sessions would be held regardless of how many Township residents register, with ACAC filling out the classes with their own clients. Ken Lehr indicated that the Township would continue to
offer the Senior Water Walking sessions to see if anyone is interested.
Ken Lehr reported that no one signed up for the Senior Fitness Sampler. As a result the session was cancelled.
Ken Lehr, reporting on the Township's Yoga and Pilates fitness program, informed that the first class for the winter session (February 11th)
was cancelled due to snow. As a result, the winter session will begin on Thursday February 18th. At this time seven people have signed up for the winter session. The spring session is scheduled to
begin on March 25th.
Ken Lehr, reporting on the 2010 Summer Concert Series. Informed that he Blackthorn, and that the band is available for the July 25th time
slot. Additionally, Ken Lehr stated that he is still finalizing the entertainment for the Children's concert.
Ken Lehr, reporting on the Egg Hunt and Decorated Hat Parade, informed that he would distribute bags containing Easter eggs along with assorted
candy to each Park and Recreation Board member after the meeting with instructions to fill each Easter egg with candy and return the stuffed Easter eggs to the Township Building during or before the next
Park and Recreation Board meeting. This year's event is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 27th with a rain date of Saturday, April 3rd.
New Business: There was no new business to discuss at this time.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for March 17, 2010.
